Bahr Scholarships Deadline Extended to July 28

The deadline to apply for two 2003-04 Bahr Scholarships to Empire State College's Center for Distance Learning, part of the State University of New York, has been extended to July 28.

All applicants will be considered, but priority is given to CWA members, their families and domestic partners. The scholarships cover tuition and other fees toward a two-year or four-year degree with an allowance for study materials and books up to $130 per course.

Students can live anywhere in the world and qualify for the scholarship, completing their studies via the Internet or by mail. Winners are selected by a committee comprising a representative of CWA and Empire State College faculty and staff. Criteria include an ability to succeed in college studies, a program match with educational and career goals, leadership qualities, financial need and diversity.

Two scholarships are available this year. Fifteen were awarded in 2001, when the program began, and another four students were recipients last year. Thirteen of them are continuing students. Because it is a distance-learning program, it is geared toward giving adult workers with fulltime jobs an opportunity to study from home.

Each student receives a personalized program and academic advising, as well as skill assessments. Students are assigned a faculty mentor and an instructor for each course. In addition, an online Bahr Scholars Roundtable allows students to exchange information and pursue collaborative projects.

More information and all scholarship materials are available online at www.esc.edu/alliance. Click on "Bahr Scholarships" at the top of the page. CWA local leaders are urged to post information about the scholarships and encourage members and families to apply.
