Kerry Jumps into Adelphia Bargaining Fray

Senator John Kerry has written to William Schleyer, CEO of Adelphia Corp., urging the company to reach "a fair agreement that will be positive for the workers, the community and the company."

"The workers of your corporation have exercised their right to join a union and bargain collectively," Kerry pointed out in his July 23 letter. "I respect the right and basic American freedom of every working person to pursue equality, opportunity, a voice on the job and a better life by forming a union. I believe that unions contribute to the economic vitality of our country by playing a key role in making and maintaining the good quality jobs that are essential to creating and sustaining thriving communities."

Kerry's letter comes as bargaining on behalf of 150 workers is stalled at five Adelphia locations: two in New York state, two in Virginia and one in Pennsylvania. Only two Adelphia units-one in Los Angeles and another in Cleveland-have concluded contracts with the company since it filed for bankruptcy protection in June 2002, citing $18 billion in debt.
