The most important provisions of President Obama's health care reform bill (the Affordable Care Act) are set to go into effect January 1, 2014. CWA bargainers from around the country have been sending us excellent questions about health reform and other health care matters. We will be posting our answers to these questions here on the CWA Health Care web page as they come up. Today we'll look at protections for workers who have been laid-off or on leave from work.
“The Family and Medical Leave Act was an important step forward in helping working Americans juggle the dual demands of work and family," said CWA President Larry Cohen. "It recognized that workers need time for family responsibilities, whether it’s to care for a new baby, an ailing parent or other concerns."
This week marks the 20th anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act. Since 1993, working women and men have used the law to cope with illness, tend to sick family members and care for a new child 100 million times.
Bargaining resumed today and for the first time since we started back on January 22, 2013 we had multiple meetings that lasted more than 10 minutes with some progress being made. Several tentative agreements were reached but the rejections still outweighed the progress that was made.
