Statement by CWA on Qwest's Announcement of a Revised Bid to Acquire MCI

President Morton Bahr of the Communications Workers of America issued the following statement on Qwest's announced bid to buy MCI.

From today's news reports, it appears that Qwest Communications will make a revised bid and mount a competition with Verizon over the purchase of MCI. CWA represents workers at both Qwest and Verizon.

When Verizon earlier announced a deal with MCI, we noted that the merger made good business sense in the increasingly volatile communications industry. All of regional and local telecom companies are facing growing global competition and the cable industry is posing a major challenge by marketing an array of communications, entertainment and Internet based services.

Such mergers provide an opportunity for CWA's employers to pursue growth strategies that create new services and technologies for customers and new jobs for American communities.

The same can be said if Qwest is successful in its competition to acquire MCI. CEO Dick Notebaert has done a terrific job in turning around a company that had been plagued by scandal and mismanagement by the previous management team. We've strongly supported Mr. Notebaert's efforts, and we're pleased that he is determined to build Qwest into a world-class player in this industry.
