Spotlight: Labor and Economic News Across the Country: Fighting Irish Fight for Workers
Apparel manufacturers in all countries that make clothing and other logo items for the University of Notre Dame stand to lose their lucrative contracts if they refuse to allow workers to organize.
Notre Dame’s president, the Rev. Edward Malloy, made the decision at the urging of the college’s Task Force on Anti-Sweatshop Initiatives, a group of students, faculty and administrators. Malloy also agreed to establish a factory monitoring program, beginning with a pilot project in Mexico and Central America, the Bureau of National Affairs reports.
The initiatives, to be phased in by June 30, 2001, will become part of the school’s code of conduct and be included in contracts with manufacturers. Similar initiatives have been adopted by the University of California.
