Gurganus Succeeds T.O. Moses
Delegates to the 64th CWA convention elected Jimmy Gurganus, CWA staff representative in District 3, as vice president for telecommunications.
Gurganus succeeds T.O. Moses who retired this year after 13 years of service. Moses was elected vice president emeritus by acclamation.
A longtime CWA member, activist and officer, Gurganus pledged to give CWA and its members “everything I’ve got” in the fight to improve the lives of members and raise the living standards of all working people.
Gurganus is responsible for the independent telephone companies, which include Sprint Corp., Alltel, Century, Citizens Communications and others. He will work from CWA headquarters in Washington, D.C.
A native of Jacksonville and Swansboro, N.C., Gurganus served as president of CWA Local 3681 for 27 years before joining the CWA staff.
Moses first joined the union as a lineman for Southern Bell in Monroe, La. He was elected to every post at CWA Local 3414 and also served as vice president of both the Louisiana and Texas AFL-CIOs.
In 1967, Moses joined the CWA staff, assigned to work with locals in St. Louis, Mo., and Lubbock and Austin, Tex. He also served as administrative assistant and assistant to the vice president in two District 6 administrations.
Moses was instrumental in helping to build a national partnership with GTE Corp. that helped improve labor relations at the company, which since has merged with Verizon Communications.
He promised to continue playing an active role in CWA through participation in the Retired Members Club and said, “I wish I had 50 more years to give to CWA.”
