Guild Members Use Facebook to Fight for Fairness at San Francisco Chronicle

TNG-CWA members who include some of the San Francisco Chronicle’s best-known journalists are using Facebook to tell their story in a bargaining battle that’s now six months old.

“We love this job but we also deserve fair treatment,” writes photojournalist and CityExposed columnist Mike Kepka. Reporter and columnist Carl Nolte says, “By scrimping and saving, and paying non-competitive wages, the company is only mortgaging its own future.”

The writers are among 250 members of the unit of the California Media Guild Workers, TNG-CWA Local 39521. Negotiations began in May. The contract expired June 30, but has been extended as talks continue.

Even conservative columnist Debra Saunders has posted in support of the Guild, saying, “‎I am probably the last person Chronicle readers would expect to see standing up for a union.” But Guild members want to save the newspaper as much as its owners do, she says, and have made many concessions already.
