CWA Applauds FCC Call for Industry to Negotiate Terms of Fair Competition

Communications Workers of America President Morton Bahr issued the following statement supporting the FCC's call for telecom carriers to negotiate a settlement on unbundled network elements.

We applaud the FCC's move to encourage a negotiated settlement over the availability and pricing of unbundled network elements.

The industry has been tied up in knots with regulatory and legal arguments over what constitutes fair competition in telecommunications, to the detriment of the American public. Clearly, the present policy has stifled the rollout of broadband, leaving the United States ranked 11th among nations in the number of households with high-speed Internet service.

It's vital that the industry settle this issue and get on with competition that is based on innovation, investment and quality service. That's the answer for revitalizing the telecom sector, boosting our economy and creating badly needed jobs.

We call on the companies to answer the challenge of the FCC commissioners and enter serious negotiations for a settlement that is fair to all segments of the industry.
