Our Boss Said We Didn't Need a Union. What Will Yours Say?
A Checklist: What Your Employer Might Do
What Your Employer Might Say

You are organizing to join CWA in order to make your jobs better, and we want you to succeed. That’s why those of us who have already joined CWA want to tell you what to expect from your employer during the organizing campaign.

Play See N' Say With CWA to Find Out What... "The Boss Says"!

Not every employer uses exactly the same tricks to keep workers from using their democratic right to have a union.

But we want you to know ahead of time that there is a pattern—a script—that most employers follow.

When workers organize, most employers will:

  • Make empty threats and promises.
  • Tell lies about the union.
  • Start floating rumors to discourage you.
  • Refuse to have an open, honest debate so you can hear the truth.

When you start talking union, the first thing your employer probably will do is try to confuse you by making you forget that you are the union.

CWA is here because you want it to be here, and beginning with the organizing campaign, CWA will be what you and your co-workers want it to be. CWA has professional staff to help you, but all decisions about running your union and negotiating with management will be made by you.

You will also elect delegates to CWA’s national conventions where decisions about CWA programs and finances are made by a democratic vote.

So if your employer claims that “the union” will do terrible things, he’s really attacking you.

He’s saying that you aren’t capable of making your own decisions and speaking for yourselves.

When our employers said these things, we kept our eyes on our goal—to win decent treatment on the job by speaking with a united voice—and we hope you will, too.

We’ve even provided you with a checklist inside so you can keep track of the tactics your employer uses.

Becoming part of CWA has paid off for us, and we know it will for you as well.

We hope you will join us!
